HOBIE WAVE CATAMARAN INFORMATION

by SLO Sail and Canvas

The Hobie Wave Catamaran is a small “beach cat” made by Hobie Cat since 1994. The hulls are made of Polyethylene plastic – like a modern sit on top kayak.

“Hobie Wave” is clearly written on the side of each hull. There are 2 EVA foam seats stuck to each hull - 4 total, 2+2 makes 4. The sail has no boom at the foot of the mainsail. The crossbars and trampoline are more or less flush with the deck.

The Hobie Wave is sometime confused with the Hobie 14 by some of our customers, because the Hobie Wave’s LOA (length overall) is close to 14.’ The quickest / easiest way to tell whether you have a modern Hobie Wave or a 1960’s – 1990’s Hobie 14, is checking to see if the hulls are made of plastic (Wave), or fiberglass (Hobie 14). Unsure? Call (805) 479-6122 ext.2 or email us at slosailandcanvas@yahoo.com BEFORE ORDERING, please.

The HOBIE 14 Catamaran was a small “beach cat” made by Hobie Cat from the 1960’s until the 1990’s. The hulls were made from fiberglass and resin (not molded plastic). The trampoline area was elevated on four pedestals. There is a hard aluminum “boom“ at the foot of the mainsail. If still intact, a decal near the stern will read “Hobie 14.”

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are 3 Hobie Wave variants:

HOBIE WAVE CLASSIC

HOBIE WAVE CLUB

HOBIE WAVE CLASSIC / CLUB CONVERSION

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HOBIE WAVE CLASSIC: Trampoline’s sides contain a wire that is secured to hull(s) by 3 hooks on each side. Hooks are riveted directly into plastic on the inner edge of each hull. The only trampoline tracks are found in the crossbars. There are no tracks attached to either hull for attaching the trampoline.

If only hooks are present, order any of our Hobie Wave Classic trampolines.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HOBIE WAVE CLUB: the entire trampoline (forward, rear, sides) attach to the boat via tracks – into which a portion of the trampoline, thickened by an internal “bolt rope” is inserted. There is a track in the forward crossbar, a track on each hull, and a track on the aft crossbar. Hobie Wave Club trampolines are typically 3 piece – 2 main sections, and an aft strip.

If the attachment points have NO Hooks and are ALL tracks, order any of our Hobie Wave Club Trampolines.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HOBIE WAVE CLASSIC / CLUB CONVERSION: if your Hobie Wave catamaran has 3 hooks per side – that are inserted into one track per side, then you have a Wave Club Classic Conversion boat. This configuration was produced during the transition from the (first built) Hobie Wave Classic, to the (newer) Hobie Wave Club. Hooks + Tracks = Hobie Wave Classic / Club Conversion.

If your Hobie Wave has hooks inserted into tracks of the sides, you may order either any of our Hobie Wave Classic trampolines, OR any of our Hobie Wave Club trampolines.

This article will help you choose which one is right for you.

Laser Sailboat Top Cover - Deck Cover is the most affordable and the easiest to install. Features include a built-in 1/4" shockcord that wraps around your rubrail. This shockcord, used in conjunction with lines tied through the web loops will secure the cover to your boat in all weather. Many customers choose this cover, made with Top Gun fabric, as the ultimate cover for towing at highway speed. Optional upgrades include: reflective tape (for higher visibility), and tie-down straps (added in place of the web loops). Some customers store spars under this cover, but the PRO Laser has added volume to allow for spar storage.

PRO Laser Sailboat Top Cover - Deck Cover is the premium Laser sailboat cover on the market. The PRO is made with additional space on deck to allow storage of your mast sections and boom on deck and under cover - with no need to purchase an additional Spar Bag! The PRO also features a bit of skirting to protect more of your hull than the standard top cover. The PRO comes standard - loaded with features including: reflective tape, 4 adjustable straps, custom stenciling, a rudder cutout, and more.

An issue that has come up quite a few times with some of our Hobie Getaway customers relates to some variation in the track that gets screwed into the hulls to support the sides of the forward trampoline. In order to ensure that the product is easy to install, fits well, and lasts a long time, we have two different products depending on the style of track that was installed on the boat at the time of construction. To make things more interesting, there are some boats that were damaged at some point and had the tracks changed from the original tracks.

So we made a document to help differentiate the styles of boat, if you or someone you know has a Hobie Getaway or is thinking of getting one, we hope this guide will be helpful.
